What to prepare before submitting to a business directory, and what this dataset can and cannot tell you about each one.
Before you submit
- Confirm the directory is the official one. Several major directories have look-alike submission sites.
- Read the directory’s own submission documentation. Requirements differ, and this dataset does not record them per directory.
- Decide who owns the listing internally. An orphaned profile becomes stale and reads worse than none.
Assets commonly requested
Directories typically ask for some combination of a logo, a website URL, a description, category selection, contact details, screenshots, and proof of business identity. Which of these a specific directory requires is recorded per record where a submission form was actually read.
This is an area where the dataset is currently weak, and it is worth stating plainly: required assets are Unknown for every record, because no submission form has yet been read end to end. The list above is general guidance, not a claim about any specific directory.
After submitting
- Record where and when you submitted. Approval can take weeks and the confirmation is easy to lose.
- Do not submit the same product repeatedly to speed up review.
- Where a directory has a review system, plan how you will collect reviews before the listing goes live.
Frequently asked questions
How long does approval usually take?
This dataset does not say, and deliberately so. Typical approval time is null for every record because it cannot be established without submitting to each directory. Publishing an estimate would be inventing it.
